Victoria's Secret Smile

April 26th 2011 06:43
There's a lot written about the Mona Lisa smile, although truth be told I never thought she looked that happy. People who do look happy though, are the models parading down the Victoria's Secret runway, which I was lucky enough to see as I pounded the treadmill this morning.

Watching a Victoria's Secret show while you're working out is, as I just discovered, simultaneously motivational and demotivational enough to make you pack up and stop by the chocolate and liquor stores on the way home. As my inner voices argued with each other - "keep going, that's how you'll get an ass like that" versus "seriously, give it up. You'll never have an ass like that. You need a wine" - one thing I couldn't help but notice was how incredibly cheerful those girls looked. There was none of this surly looking like I'd-rather-be-skinning-a-cat business that is regularly sent down the London, Paris and Milan catwalks. These girls looked like they were genuinely having an amazing time.

As my motivational voice won and I hauled my (not Victoria's Secret standard) ass along for a few more kilometres, I found I couldn't despise those models thanks to how happy they looked, I started to think about why they look so happy. There are a few obvious reasons of course, such as buns of steel, abs to kill for, and despite having zero body fat, boobs to rival Barbie's. I'm pretty sure most of the female population would be smiling if a similar physique were bestowed upon them, and having the confidence to dance in a g-string lingerie set is definitely worthy of a Cheshire Cat sized grin.

But it's more than being happy that you really do have the body of a Victoria's Secret model. It's that they totally translate the brand onto the catwalk. It's about being happy because you're wearing amazing lingerie. It's about bringing a bit of fantasy into your life, and how can you not be happy with that prospect?

And I'm sure they spend their fair share of time in the gym to maintain those angelic bodies. Well, at least one can only hope they do. Now, where's that wine?
