Shopaholics Anonymous

June 26th 2011 05:35
Many women joke about being shopaholics but maybe a passion for fashion can actually become an addiction, especially if you work in an industry where appearances are paramount.

Despite what is essentially a whole lot of claptrap about everyone really believing that it's what's being on the inside that counts, anyone who moves in certain business circles can vouch for the fact that what's on the outside is often what gets you the furthest, or at least gets you a foot in the door so that your fabulous personality or business acumen can then take you the rest of the way. When you consider that a few entire industries exist purely based on physical appearance, how can you really argue to the contrary, even if it's not how things should be?

But I digress. My point is that I believe shopping can become a sneaky little addiction that creeps up without you even realising it, and a lot of it is to do with keeping up appearances. As much as I joke that I'm just helping the economy, the truth is that my wardrobe is actually more than adequate, and in places I'd even go so far as to say it's quite fabulous, but I always still need more. That jacket I just bought for an interview - how did I ever manage without such a staple? The dress I just bought on the way home from brunch - surely it's completely justifiable because I can make it go from day to night....

The excuses are endless, but there's only one reason behind all of the purchases. I too am driven by my appearance more than most other things. It doesn't make me a bad person, and I am completely aware of this superficial and (I can admit it) wasteful side of myself, but still I keep on spending because in PR, looks count for a lot too. I deal with fashion clients and I need to be on-trend so they think I know what I am doing, and that I am a good representative of their business. Yes, more excuses, but ones that sadly keep my bank balance able to pay for my possibly not-so-small addiction, and the charities I donate to every month....and there I go justifying again!
