Money Can't Buy You Style

Great shoes, fabulous handbags, amazing dresses – most of us think that money can buy us the style we’ve always dreamed of, but look around you and you’ll realise it’s not necessarily true.
How often have you snickered at a red carpet outfit, or guffawed at your CEO’s suits? The idea that people with a lot of money are equally rich in style is a global misconception. Money can’t buy you style. We all say it, but how many of us actually believe it? Mountains of cash would definitely solve my wardrobe woes. But when you start to look closely at what those wealthier people around you are wearing, it becomes very clear that whilst money can buy you many things, it most definitely cannot buy you style.
Thinking that money buys style is an easy mistake to make. After all, why would Christian Dior couture be so expensive if it wasn’t to ensure that the wealthy folk look their very best? There is no doubt that it should become inherently easier to look fabulous when you find yourself rolling in dough. Just flick through the pages of Vogue and you can mentally spend tens of thousands just on a wardrobe just for work. In fact, you can fork out $50 for a Manolo candle. Surely such tip-offs as this would make it a cinch to be sickeningly trendy? However, from what I have seen of the wardrobes of acquaintances who have made millions, there seems to be no shortage of incredibly expensive yet incredibly ugly garments on the market.
Flick through the social pages of any newspaper across the country and you'll see many of the who’s who of society looking like they got dressed in the dark. To a certain extent, the everyday rich person can be excused for exercising a complete lack of taste. If you have no taste prior to having squillions in the bank, chances are you will still have no taste after the cash rolls in. However, when it is completely unacceptable to showcase the mantra “money can’t buy you style” is when you are in the public eye. Britney Spears is often touted as one of the worst dressed women on the planet, as is Mariah Carey. Without a doubt, these ladies must spend a lot of what very little they do put on, but two females who manage to offend or incite ridicule from the majority of the female population surely need to ask themselves some serious wardrobe questions. There is no denying that these two ladies could be knockouts if they so chose. At their physical peak these ladies have showed off amazing bodies, but what they have failed to realise is that the general public is smart enough to figure out that they are genetically blessed without us seeing everything but the pink bits...oh, sorry we have seen those too.
Just as I like to think I would resemble something straight from the pages of Vogue should I suddenly inherit a small fortune, there are those shining examples of money making it much easier to look immaculate and fabulous at all times. Princess Mary brought to life the fairytale that most of us had as little girls. Not only did she marry a prince, but she also became the owner of a jaw dropping wardrobe, and never has to be seen in the same thing twice should she not want to be. That has to be a bigger fantasy for most women than a never-ending packet of chocolate biscuits. With a rare few like Mary as the exception, the stars of our past seem to have had the style knack more so than the celebrities of today. Think of the ill fated Princess Di and the style guru Jacqui Kennedy Onassis who still influences fashion today. These ladies knew how to look both elegant and fashionable and didn’t resort to flash trends, or flashing flesh.
At the end of the day, money SHOULD be able to buy you style. I personally think there is no excuse for being wealthy and looking appalling. The number of times I have trawled through stores and even fashion magazines thinking “If only I could afford this…” is a testament to the fact that the more money you have, the better style you should exercise. So to the wealthy of the world, whether you be of celebrity status or not, you owe it to the common majority to disprove the belief that money cannot buy you style. And if without a doubt, it cannot buy you style, at least let it buy you a stylist…
