Men who don't try

August 4th 2009 08:57
I know I’ve said before that men’s fashion is, in my opinion, limited in comparison to the options bestowed upon females. However I do still think that if a man makes effort, he can look incredibly dashing (don’t you love that word?) and fabulously stylish. And yet every day I see more horrific ensembles on men than on women, and considering the CBD is teeming with dapper gents, I don’t understand why those who are letting the side down fail to see what they’re doing wrong. As much as I hate to say it…there seems to be a subculture of men looking worse than women.

Take this morning for example, I was pondering exactly this topic as I marched through the CBD on my way to the office. Running a tad late from my usual leaving home time, I hit the very peak of peak hour and so I had many, many fashion subjects to fascinate me as I navigated my way through the crowds of the city. Now, I am very (okay, sort of) lenient in my fashion criticisms in the morning because I know that this town often requires ill-matched footwear in particular to be donned in order to get to work. I myself walk a fair distance to get to my office, and although I do my utmost to match one my limited pairs of flat shoes to what I have on, sometimes it doesn’t quite work, but it’s just that bit too far to get away with stilettos.

However, despite my willingness to overlook such minor mismatches, one man in particular stood out for me this morning. He was wearing fabulous shoes, and a wonderful grey suit, and then underneath it, he had on a bright blue polo shirt. At first I was confused, and then I was visually offended. What! Was! He! Thinking! Now I know I regularly spruik each to their own and individual style is where it’s at, but seriously, you can dress like a Harijuku and still manage to coordinate. Being lenient in the mornings, a little voice cried out “maybe he’s colour blind!” It’s a common thing in men after all. And then I realized blue isn’t one of the colours that the male brain confuses, and my forgiving side was gone. Blue polo shirt? Not okay.

The reason this subject came into my head at all is because last night I hosted a wee dinner party, and Knocked Up was on after we ate. The early scene where the guys and the girls are in the same club, and the girls look a million bucks and the boys look like they dressed from a two dollar shop elicited comments from all of us. Stevie was the first to cast a scathing observation in regards to how little the men had tried in regards to their ensembles whereas the girls had clearly gone to some level of effort. This lead to a discussion of how often you see a couple out for dinner, for lunch, for anything really, where the girl has clearly dressed to impress, and the guy has clearly dressed from the floor.

Guys, we don’t need you to put the Armani suit on to take us to brunch but when ladies, for the most part, are dressing partially because they still want to impress you, the least you could do is really take an honest look at yourself before you leave the house, and swap the blue polo shirt for a crisp white business shirt. Here’s another option – think, would you wear that if you knew you were going to bump into Beyonce today? If the answer is no, we probably don’t want to see it either.
