Lost clothes

I have lived through the strange phenomenon of disappearing clothes several times, and I was relieved this week to learn I am not alone. When I first told my boyfriend I had managed to somehow lose a little black dress (the victim of the most recent incident, and the disappearance of which I am devastated about), he got all suspicious and asked where I could have possibly left such an item. That’s just the problem - I have no idea. I went for it in my wardrobe, and it just wasn’t there. This is a most upsetting and perplexing predicament. How can clothes just vanish?
This week, a colleague of mine mentioned that she’s lost her best winter jacket. I would say a coat is possibly even more difficult to lose than a relatively small dress, but it’s left both of us baffled. Dresses and coats are things you tend to remember taking off and putting down, and yet neither of us have the foggiest where said items have ended up. You do tend to have flashbacks of leaving a jacket like that on the train, or in a cab, usually once the freezing wind rips right through your now inadequate attire. The problem with the dress however, is that I would have had to have ended up pretty close to naked after having taken it off, and since I’m not in the habit of heading home in just my knickers, you’d think there’s not that many places I could have actually left it behind.
My friend at work also revealed that in a similar timeframe to losing the jacket, she’s also managed to misplace a couple of bits of jewelry. Again, slightly easier to lose, but again something you tend to notice is missing relatively quickly. Due to the circumstances, both of us assumed our missing items had to be in our houses somewhere, but after turning our abodes inside out trying to find these things, have since realized they most definitely are not. That said, I did discover a fabulous pair of shoes I haven’t worn in a very long time, so I took some solace in that.
But where do these lost items go? Is someone somewhere wandering around in my black dress and my friend’s jacket? Imagine if the same person by some great stroke of luck happened upon both and scored a whole outfit. Incredible. But the dress and the jacket are certainly no longer in our possession, so we can only hope that our lost clothes are either playing an incredibly tricky game of hide and seek and are waiting just long enough to revive our initial truly-madly-deeply-in-love-wi th-the-new-garment phase before reappearing, or the more plausible option – that whoever has found our cherished belongings is at least getting as much pleasure out of them as we used to.
I wonder if putting up a ‘have you seen this dress?’ poster on all the lampposts I pass every day would bring my LBD home?
