A bit of a bag lady

Not so long ago I had a friend come to my apartment for the first time. (Not the first time I’ve ever had a friend in my apartment, I mean she’d never been over before...sheesh, that much of a sad case I am not!) Upon taking the tour, which doesn’t take very long at all, she wandered into my bedroom and commented “most girls have a thing about shoes, bags or hats, but not usually all three!” Is this true? Do people usually hone their obsessions to one category of fashion? What an incredible thought.
Although my hat collection is nowhere near as extensive as my range of shoes or bags, I do still like a nice hat. But my shoes and my bags are really where it’s at. Buying shoes like a crazy person a lot of people understand. Buying bags religiously, less so. And sometimes I understand why. As much as I love my handbags, changing the one you tote day to day is actually a colossal pain. The number of times I’ve switched bags to better suit my work ensemble only to get to work and discover I’ve left a crucial item in the previous day’s bag is beyond a joke. But yet I love my handbags, and I know I’m not alone.
Handbags are like shoes in that they are one of the few accessories I believe have the ability to change the entire look and feel of an outfit. A fabulously large and loud handbag says something very different to a structured grey clutch even when paired with the exact same ensemble. Bags also, like most fashion choices, also say a lot about the person carrying it. And more flippantly, they’re so fabulously fun!
I also read an interesting stat today – 22% of women would spend up on a bag if they could only choose one designer piece, whereas only 9% said shoes. I find this quite staggering, but there you go.
