Euro Fashion at Eurovision
May 15th 2011 09:31
As Sydney waits for the Eurovision final to kick off, the fashion from last night is probably still spinning around in the minds of those who tuned into the second semi-finals last night.
Single gloves, red leather, billowing capes on mini dresses and insanely high hair (on the men) were trends that only the great stage of the annual song contest can pull off.
The backless shirt sported by Denmark's lead (male) singer was a particular highlight for me, as was the sparkly red introduction to Ireland's Jedward who are by all accounts insanely famous despite their highly questionable taste in both clothes and hairstyle.
As my flatmate and I giggled our way through the countries on show, we did have to discuss if this is a true representation of European fashion, or if those chosen to represent their countries feel they'd be letting the tradition down if they didn't rise to the challenge of looking as crazy as possible.
There were of course the glamours of the event, the TWiiNS from Slovakia wore dresses as beautiful as they are, showcasing their incredible pins. As you would if you looked like that.
But really I think half the joy of Eurovision is the completely musical theatre over the top-ness of both the songs and the outfits that accompany them.
Here's to seeing what's worn in the finals!
