Colour coded

I had a big old chat about hair colour to a colleague who I have spent the last two days traveling with. I mentioned that one of my clients, who is in the hair biz, is "encouraging" me to go copper. As a blonde, I fear changing my hair colour for a couple of reasons. First and foremost is having the weirdest regrowth ever when I'm ready to rejoin the blonde brigade, and secondly that when that time comes, my natural colour will grow back darker rendering me at the mercy of bleach for the rest of my days.
The challenge of copper is also the maintenance. Despite red being oh so very in this season, keeping it glossy and vibrant is a challenge that most unnatural redheads will tell you they failed at miserably. Maintenance in the majority of aspects of life for me = too hard basket and outsourced. Only I can't outsource my hair every day.
Anyway, this colleague of mine is one of those girls who has changed her hair colour as often as the fashion trends change, and she has basically gone through the rainbow of possible personal colour possibilities. Brunette? Done it. Blonde? Currently. Redhead? Been there.
What I found most interesting about chatting to this chameleon of colour was an aspect of the change that I had never considered - needing to adapt your wardrobe accordingly. But it makes perfect sense, and makes the prospect of a dramatic change even more daunting - and expensive. According to my new found colour expert, grey outfits that looked classic and cool as a blonde rendered her frumpy and bland as a brunette. Makeup that suited her as a redhead had to be thrown out when the new blonde version of her made her debut. Hmmm. The commitment just got a whole lot bigger.
So basically if I hate being a copperhead and want to revert back to blonde in 8 weeks, I still need a wardrobe insert of new staples for those two months? Sheesh! And then post redhead, I need to never wear them again? Heavens! (Although realistically many clothes I probably wear for a couple of months and then decide I hate....but that's not the point...)
Despite not having thought about it previously, her revelation makes perfect sense. Just like some colours don't work when you're putting your outfit together in the morning, some colours on your head won't work with the colours you put on the rest of you.
Maybe I'll stick to blonde after all.
