Fashion Ahoy

July 26th 2009 02:58
As my bestie Stevie and I went for a lovely stroll yesterday we wandered past a very exclusive yacht club, and this sparked discussion on a couple of fronts. Firstly about what we dubbed the “poor person fence” which surrounded the very exclusive deck/beer garden area, clearly designed to keep the likes of me and Stevie, no matter how fashionable for a Saturday afternoon, out, and the very exclusive yachting types in. Great big dogs were allowed but not us in our fabulous afternoon attire. Hmph. I can guarantee we’d have appreciated the Malborough SSB more, but I digress.

The second point began after Stevie forlornly conveyed how much he would like to have a boat, as we discussed what exactly constitutes boating fashion. Although it’s not exactly ideal weather to be swanning about the harbour on a catamaran in dear Sydney, nor is it really the economic climate to be daydreaming about such frivolities, there is still something about stepping onto a massive, shiny boat that captures the imaginations of many of us.

This was shattered somewhat as we passed the epitome of boating clichés – a man with a white jumper tied loosely around his shoulders, wearing hideous, matching deck shoes, and I took the liberty of pointing out to Stevie that even if he should find himself the proud owner of a yacht, I would never be seen with him should be don such an atrocious stereotype of an outfit. But we did begin to discuss what our ideas of boating fashion are.

If you believe the fashion magazines and their regular forays into “nautical inspired” designs, the fashion police would prevent you from boarding any boat if you weren’t sporting navy, cream, stripes, or ideally a combination of all three. Trousers must be cropped, and swim wear is often restricted to a one piece. Hmm. I think not. Boats are revered for their glamour factor, so why shouldn’t you dress accordingly?

Of course like any fashion situation, what you’re climbing aboard for should dictate your outfit, but I still say bring your own flair and style to the yacht – don’t go for boring boating stereotypes. You may be forced to wear flat, white soled shoes by those mean skippers, but let the dictating stop there.

“What about a bikini with stilettos?” Stevie asked, and my response was only if your host is a gangsta rapper. And if you take your cues from MTV rather than Vogue, the stilettos and bikini is probably a more frequently seen boating fashion. Add a sarong if you’re feeling modest, of course.
