A Hairy Question
June 17th 2011 10:30
Before I worked with hair, I never really considered it an element of fashion, Those who work in the hair industry would crucify me for saying so, but I always thought of them as completely separate.
Over the last long weekend I lived through Hair Expo in Sydney and if that wasn't a key indicator of hair's link to fashion, there probably isn't one. The hair fashion on display was nothing short of spectacular and I don't even mean the ones being sported by those working the floor, or onstage. The onslaught of the trendy, the cutting edge and the insanely on-trend marched through the doors for three days straight, putting the "trendy" styles like that worn by the likes of me to shame.
It was this weekend that I learned to what a great extent what happens on people's heads is influenced by what is happening on catwalks. I know that hair trends seen on red carpets and the famous folk that we idolize are often copied in the mainstream arena, but translating high fashion to hair isn't something I'd ever considered, nor is it something I understand.
Despite this lack of comprehension on my part, I can understand that your hair is an integral part of your fashion statement, and a major way to communicate this is through colour. Matt Clements, named Colour Technician of the Year at the Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards held on Monday night, is proof of why and how hair is synonymous with fashion.
Here's to the crowning glory of fashion!
